GIN Seas: Irminger Current

Irminger

The Irminger Current is a northward flowing branch of the North Atlantic Drift.

It flows north from North Atlantic Ocean through the Denmark Strait forming a sharp thermal front where it interacts with the Southward flowing East Greenland Current.

The temperature of the East Greenland Current in this region is around -1 Deg C and the Irminger current waters are between 7 to 9 Deg C. This results in very strong thermal gradients where the two water masses meet and mix.

When we went to the Denmark Strait on the survey ships the meeting of these contrasting water masses combined with the prevailing weather conditions at that time resulted in the formation of a series of thing fog banks that the ship passed though as we traversed back and forth across the front.

And that concludes my series of posts on the GIN Seas. I hope you have found them informative.
